We’re joined at the NATO summit in Chicago by Scott Olsen, who survived two tours in Iraq but almost died when he was hit with a police projectile at an Occupy Oakland protest last year. Olsen returned four of his medals at Sunday’s antiwar march. When asked why he’s joined the Occupy movement and is protesting against the heavily-policed NATO summit, Olsen says, "I am going to make every effort I can to show them that we’re doing the right thing. No matter what they do to any of us, we’ve got each other’s backs and we’re going forward." [Transcript to come. Check back soon.]

Hundreds of protesters marched to the home of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s former chief of staff, on Saturday to oppose Emanuel’s cutting of social services while funding a massive security operation during the NATO summit. The day earlier, a group of nurses led a march in downtown Chicago to protest austerity cuts. "They say cut back — we say fight back," the protesters chanted. Police dispersal order in 10 minutes. 2:35pm: Chicago Police are distributing memos saying the rally must clear our by 2pm Central (3pm Eastern) and warning protesters not to block traffic or businesses and to stay on sidewalks when marching. 2pm: Tom Morello with Tim from Rise Against performing at front stage now singing union solidarity songs to excited crowd of 1000s. Corporate media pedicatbly ignoring or downplaying the rally. 1pm: Nurses and allies still gathering in Daley Plaza, sharing food and listening to music. NNU official rally getting underway in a few moments. Heavy police presence, but situation is calm and festive. Everyone in Chicago should join them! Right now: The ¨G8¨ toasts to austerity in performance. Soon: Labor leaders and other speakers to address crowd. 12:30pm: Today’s rally calls for a Robin Hood Tax (a tax of 0.5 percent on financial institutions’ transactions to pay for health care, education, etc) and is led by National Nurses United .
